Wedding Styled Shoot Workbook Review 

Many of you know I've been a party stylist and the occasional craft workshop host for the last 6+ years.  So I'm  no stranger to styling parties for a photo shoot.  This year I added wedding coordinator to my resume.  The thing is, I didn't have a wedding portfolio to showcase my ability to help couples bring their vision to life.  I know I can help couples style their wedding but they don't know that because I don't have anything to show them.  This is where a wedding styled shoot comes in.  But styling a wedding is different then styling a party shoot. I needed a little help.  

Engaged Wedding Planner Academy's The Styled Shoot Workbook  was the help I needed.  The workbook walks you through step-by-step which makes it so easy to create a styled shoot.  The workbook includes a timeline so you know about how long it takes to do a wedding shoot. A checklist which made sure I didn't forget anything and  areas to brainstorm your styled shoots vision.  The section on how to create a mood board was very helpful.  I'd never created one before because I didn't need one when I was styling my parties.  With wedding styled shoots you have several vendors involved and they can't see the vision in your mind so you need to create a mood board.

There's a whole section of check lists for each vendor so you're sure not to miss anything for your shoot.  And the tips! Everything from finding a venue, to finding models to shots that you want to make sure the photographer gets.  

Because of this workbook my first styled shoot went really well, I got to work with some great vendors and have a great time during the shoot.

Go Naked with Your Table 

Just like spring weddings, summer weddings are a great time to go naked with your table. There's SO many beautiful wood tables for rent why cover them with full table linens. Add some color and texture with a runner, florals and candles. 

Add texture and color

When you go naked with your table pull in color and texture with your place settings and accessories. Colored napkins bring a burst of color to white plates and adding an embroidering hoop with a floral accent adds texture and interest.  Embroidery hoops are inexpensive and add interest to the place settings. 

 

Colored Candles + Florals 

Colorful candles can compliment your floral's.  Are you doing as much of your wedding as you can on your own with the help of family and friends ? Use crystal ice buckets to hold florals.   You can get flowers at farmers markets for a great price.  Ask your family if they have any candle sticks you can borrow, rent them or shop your thrift stores for some. Don't worry about them matching.  Unless it's just going to bug the heck out of you if they don't match.  Candles come in a variety of colors to match almost any wedding color scheme. 

With just a few items you can add a punch of color to your summer wedding table.  Perfect for a backyard wedding or an elopement.  For this table I rented the place settings, serving pieces, and glasses  from Power of Love Rentals.  The table runner is fabric from my local fabric store, candle sticks I purchased from thrift shops for a great deal, the crystal ice bucket was my own and the florals for this shoot are fake, I picked them up at a craft store.

Go Naked. With your table. 

Spring weddings are a great time to go naked with your table.  Don't hide that beautiful wood table under a full table linen.   High light the wood with a colourful table linen.  I like to go with a lighter fabric for spring weddings.

Add some pattern

Looking to add some pattern onto your reception table?  Do it with the napkins.  You can go for something light like this floral pattern or go big and bold. You can even go for a lighter pattern for the table and go with something bolder for the cocktail napkins.

Add some romance with coloured place settings

Light coloured place settings add a touch of romance to your table.  If your larger rental places don't carry coloured place settings, check with the smaller rental companies.  Smaller rental companies tend to have more specialty place settings and other rental items. They might also be more willing to special order items for your wedding if it's something they think they can re-rent out to other couples.

 

Clearly I need to work on my photography skills. This ones a little fuzzy, oops! This is why you hire a professional photographer for your wedding.  Yes I know, they seem expensive but SO worth it.  Oh sure, you could save some money by having your family and friends take photo's but you could end up with fuzzy pics like mine above. This is your wedding! There's places to cut costs and places not to cut costs. And a photographer is not one of those vendors where you cut costs.

Coloured candles + Floral's 

Colourful candles can compliment your floral's.  Are you doing as much of your wedding as you can on your own with the help of family and friends ? Pick up or borrow some small glass bottles to hold your flowers.   You can get flowers at farmers markets for a great price.  Ask your family if they have any candle sticks you can borrow, rent them or shop your thrift stores for some. Don't worry about them matching.  Unless it's just going to bug the heck out of you if they don't match. 

The day I styled this table it happened to be a beautiful spring day. But if you live in Oregon an outdoor spring wedding can be tricky.   The day could be beautiful and sunny or rainy.   I highly recommend a tent.  Don't take a chance on the weather being perfect on your spring wedding day.

So Exciting!! You got engaged 💍 You've been basking in that post engagement glow and now you're ready to start planning your wedding.  Which is not easy.  You've got everyone and their mother giving you their opinions.  Then there's all those ideas sucking you down the Pinterest  rabbit hole and don't even get me started on the Instagram wedding worthy overwhelm.

You had all these plans that you were going to plan your wedding yourself but then when you really sat down to do it and all the outside influences started creeping in you were like, Dang, we need a little help.  So you search the net for a wedding planner but that's not really what you need.   A wedding planner is too full service for what you're looking for.  You just want a little help with a few things.  So you type in wedding coordinator and wedding consultant.  Ok, these services look more like what you're looking for.  But which one do you choose? You want to pick someone who matches your style and personality.

Your my ideal couple if you like to have fun!  You want to plan your own wedding but dang it it's hard and you still want to have a life. You don't want wedding planning to consume all your free time and you just want a little help here and there.  Or maybe this is your second marriage or a vow renewal and you don't want the big to-do and are looking for someone to help you create a little more relaxed playful wedding.  Or maybe you don't even want a wedding, you're thinking an elopement. 

Your the type of couple that wants to get married on the beach, in a backyard, in the woods, standing in a waterfalls pool, up a mountain trail that ends in a beautiful view, in a park or even a boxing gym. You want to add some wedding elements, décor and design to these places but you don't want the big fancy pants go all out type of wedding.

Not the same type of wedding they've been to before.

I'm that wedding consultant who will help you when that thought hits you and you're like, 'wait, how do we do this idea I just had?' Being creative, crafty and styling on the fly are my strong points.  I'm the stylist who the morning of a party or wedding will wake up at 5:00 a.m. and think, OOOOHHH, YES! Why I Became a Wedding Consultant

Why I Became a Wedding Consultant 

Let's chat about the differences between a wedding planner, wedding coordinator and a wedding consultant.

Wedding Planner-  The all-encompassing everything for your wedding.  They're all about the logistics, from vendor referrals, keeping track of your budget, contract negotiations, day-of executing and more.  Wedding planners are the ones you tell them your ideas for your wedding and the feel you want and they run with it.  They are very involved with your entire wedding process.  They'll create a detailed timeline and floor plans.  And oversee everything on the day of your wedding.

This is not what I do. If you're looking for someone who will pretty much do everything when it comes to planning your wedding, that's not me. I'm not a wedding planner.

Wedding Coordinator- Does a lot of what the wedding planner does but on a shorter timeline.  They'll help you prepare a few months before the wedding.  A wedding coordinator will confirm your vendor contracts, create a day-of timeline, make sure payments and guest counts are in order, create a seating chart. They'll also make sure that on the day of your wedding that everything runs smoothly.

This is not what I do either.

Wedding Consultant- If you look up the term online it'll say that a wedding consultant is the same as a wedding planner or coordinator.  But I don't think so.  The services I offer are geared toward the couples who want to plan their own wedding and just need a little help here and there.  Couples who want a smaller wedding, second marriages, vow renewals and elopements.  Couples who want a more causal vibe to their weddings, fun, colourful, backyard, in the woods, personalized, you- do- you weddings.  No seating charts, no sit down four course meals, no 200+  guests.

So just what do I help couples with? A LOT!

• Vendor lists- I'll send you a list of vendors I've personally met or used their services. 
• Dress shopping- Portland is a HOT place to move to. But what if you move here, get engaged and you don't have anyone to go dress shopping with until your friends fly out for a visit?  You hire me! I'll help you pick a dress for your wedding feel and one that looks amazing on you. 
• Helping with any questions. Planning a wedding means you'll have A LOT of questions.  It's not like you get married every day.  
• Getting a yes or no from guests who haven't RSVP'd. You should not have to deal with the stress of calling guests to see if they're coming or not. You should be enjoying every minute of being engaged and planning your wedding. 
• Reminding  and reassuring you that it's YOUR wedding when co-workers, friends, family try to tell you how your wedding should be and stress you out. And ooh boy does this happen. Seems like as soon as you get engaged everyone gives you input on how your wedding should be. Or when you tell them an idea you're really excited about for your wedding, they give you the side-eye look and then you start second guessing your idea you were so excited about. 
• Monthly to-do's emailed to you so you stay on track with your planning.
• Taking all your Pinterst ideas and helping you pull a look together so your wedding is Amazing!
• Finding locations. Especially if you're new to the area.
• Ways to help you cut costs in some areas so you can get that item, look, service, you REALLY want. 
• Helping calm the stress.  When you just need someone to talk to, vent to, cry out the stress too. 

So just why did I become a wedding consultant?

You hear it all the time, I became a wedding planner/coordinator etc because I planned my wedding and loved it or because I just love love or I love helping peoples dream wedding come true. Nope.Nope. and Nope.   I did love planning both my weddings, even the stressy bits.  Seeing people in love always makes people happy. And of course it's a fantastic feeling helping someones dream wedding come true.   The reason I became a wedding consultant is because I know there's couples out there who want to plan their own wedding and just need a little help here and there.  They don't need a full service planner. Being like a couples personal wedding assistant, knowing I helped save them a lot of time and stress, that's the BEST feeling.  I'm good at styling parties and the type of weddings I love to help couples with which are fun, colourful, adventurous, smaller guest count and a little more on the casual side.  Hearing the stress in a brides voice when she calls me and at the end of the call the stress in her voice is gone and she feels relieved and much better about the wedding. LOVE that! I want every couple to enjoy the wedding planning process like I did and especially to enjoy and remember their wedding day.  I love inspiring, encouraging, motivating and seeing people happy.  Becoming a wedding consultant uses all my skills, lights me up, gives me that twinkle in my eye and best of all, challenges me.

Smirk Photobooth Co's Birthday at Opal 28

Last week I attended Smirk Photo Booth Co's first business birthday at Opal 28 in Portland, Oregon.  The first time I met Skylor was at an event at Opal 28.  Her photo booth was so fun and she has so much energy, like me. So of course when her business hit one and she threw a party, I had to attend. 

Beautiful chalk work by HeyHalle.  I haven't met her yet but you all know I'd like too.   I always like meeting fellow creatives, especially local ones.  I like to have go-to people I know for my parties and events.

Who can resist a cheese spread. I seriously need to host a wine and cheese party some day.

Delicious vegan meals were made by Hays Kitchen for Smirk Photobooth Co's birthday party.  Although I'm not a vegan and don't like veggies, I'm like a kid when it comes to veggies, seriously, the food did look really good.   As you can see, the guests enjoyed the food.

Now THIS is what I'm talking about. Dessert.  Britters Bakery made this yumminess.   I was bummed I missed them at the event. I always enjoy meeting bakers.  My parties always need treats 😊 The mini cupcakes were melt in your mouth yummy and those gummy bears! Oh my gosh. I had to make sure to stay far away after I had a few.  I could have eaten the whole bowl.

Smirk Photo Booth Co has the funnest props! Look at all that glitter 😍😍 I really love all the variety too.  That Censored one is hilarious.  Hello happy unicorn.

So much variety and you can't go wrong with a disco ball.

Fun with Deco Foil

 **Therm-O- Web  sent me product to play with, woo hoo!! **

While at SNAP conference  I came across the Therm-OWeb booth with this fun product,  Deco Foil.  I got to try it out in the booth and oh the possibilities that I could use this for in my parties.  I was even part of their blog !!! eeeeeee , BIG smiles. Ok, let's dive in and see one of the ways I used this fun product.

I recently styled a wedding and had so much fun that I'm seriously thinking of styling more.  I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on this. Leave me a comment below if you want to see more styled wedding posts.  Ok, back to how I used the Deco Foil.  I made fun signs for the wedding. I took arrow signs from Oriental Trading , wrote wedding locations on them and drew cute little pictures. I'll be showing you how to use the Deco Foil in the next post. So be sure to come back by. It's super easy to use.

Say I DO among the tree's. Living in the Pacific North West there are so many great places to marry outdoors.  Aren't my little bride and groom cute :)

After the ceremony your guests are going to want to fill up on good food and get the party started.  Show them the way to the reception  with a sign.

We had a mini candy bar at our wedding and I don't think we brought any candy home.  I love candy so it was a must.  I had a candy bar at the wedding I recently styled but it's not on the blog...yet.

Photo booths are fun at weddings and especially with so many people on Instagram you'll want to have one at your wedding.

For all these signs I drew the letters and pictures on the arrows with a pencil first.  Than I wrote on them using the Deco Foil liquid adhesive . Once that was dry I rubbed on the Deco Foil transfer sheet. I'll be showing you just how easy this is in the next post.

Wedding Love Among the Hydrangeas

It's wedding season!  I've been married for, ooh lets see, 9 years now so no wedding plans in my future.  But styling parties is what I love doing and weddings are just big parties so I'm dipping my toe in the wedding styling arena.  

I saw these LOVE letters on Marry Me by Oriental Trading  and knew just what I wanted to do with them.  They originally came in silver but silver didn't fit my theme.  So I busted out the spray paint and changed them from silver to gold. 

My original idea for these LOVE letters was to style them as part of a photo booth backdrop.  As you can see, that's not what I did with them. Sometimes your original idea changes a little. And that's ok.   This is how the new idea came about:  My friend asked me to watch her pets over the weekend and I remembered the great little waterfall area she has in her backyard.  It looks like a place where a small ceremony would take place. So I packed up the LOVE letters, took them over to her house and while her dog was running around the yard I snapped some photos.

I love the sound of this little water fall.  Seriously thinking of researching water features for our backyard now.

My friend also has these great hydrangeas bushes.  Definitely going to be planting some of these in our backyard.  Her hydrangeas make for a beautiful wedding backdrop.  I can picture the wedding party posing for photos in front of these bushes.

Wedding- Candy Inspired

Candy themed Wedding Inspiration 

** I was given product by Oriental Trading for this styled shoot. Full disclosure, I've been shopping at Oriental Trading long before they gave me product to use in this shoot. 

When Oriental Trading told me they had a wedding line I immediately had to check it out. I already love using their products for my parties so I had to see what the wedding line contained.  ooooh, I found SO much I could use for my parties.  So when they asked me to style something using their wedding line I was all over it. Let's take a look. 

This was my first mini wedding styled shoot and I had so. much. fun! After all, a wedding is just a big party.  For this shoot I chose Martha Stewarts fall 2017 unique color combination.  I love the POPs of yellow and pinky/mauve, the fresh green and of course my fav, red.  And the black anchors it all. 

I'm not a fancy pants wedding kind of person.  While I love the look of those types of weddings they just aren't me.  I'm more of a wedding as just a big fun party kind of person.  The colors I was using as inspiration made me think of candy so I chose that as my theme.  I sent the colors to Kiss Me Kate Studio,  told her I was going with a candy theme and asked her to create an invitation and RSVP card for me. She nailed it. The font and candy say fun but she also captured the wedding feel.    

For this styled shoot I wasn't re-creating the whole wedding, just parts of it. I skipped the ceremony part and went straight for the reception.  The morning started out drizzly and I thought we were going to have to shoot indoors. But when Photography Hill arrived the sun came out and we moved everything outside. Woo Hoo!!!

I wanted to create a fun little station for guests to grab drinks and a treat after dancing the day away.  A bubbly bar  with drinks for adults, Coppola Blanc de Blanc in fun little handy cans and Fentiman's for the kids and those that don't care for alcohol.   The octopus is not only fun but it draws people over to the bubbly bar and is one of the inspiration colors, yellow.

The Coppola comes with little straws but the Fentiman's does not. So I tied paper straws to the Fentiman's.  The straws pull in the red from the inspiration colors while the ribbon pulls in the pink and the table pulls in the black. The bottles and cans also pull in the inspiration colors.

Besides working up a thirst dancing the day/night away you might also want a little treat.  Popsicles are great for summer or warm fall weddings.  Lickety Pops is a local company here in Portland.  Their refreshing flavors will surely be a treat for your guests.  This is their raspberry thyme flavor and yes, it is delish.

Wedding and Party Rentals

This beautiful old building houses Vintage Mingle Rentals and Petite Events located in Portland, Oregon. I took a peek inside this past weekend to see just what Vintage Mingle has for rent.  

Many people think of rental places for weddings but they're great for birthday, anniversary, holiday, and just because parties too. Let's take a peek inside,

 When you walk into Vintage Mingle this book case full of beautiful vases just waiting to be filled greets you. That green glass would be perfect for a Wizard of Oz, St. Patrick's Day or a glamorous lux event. 

Cake stands are a weakness for owner, Pilar. As they are for all of us who throw a lot of parties.  Although we'd love to collect all the cake stands we fall in love with, we don't always have the room. That's why rental places like Vintage Mingle are so great. You get to enjoy the many beautiful cake stands without having to figure out where to store them! 

These orange glass stands would be great for a Halloween party and that green glass, again, Wizard of Oz, St. Patrick's Day, Super Hero...

 Clear glass is always a great choice for parties. It allows the pretty colours of your desserts to shine.  I'm going back for those cupcake cloches. They're perfect for a party I have in mind. 

 It was really hard not to walk out without all those pink cake plates. I have an upcoming Pink party as you know if you follow my Instagram.

 Are you swooning yet? That blue and the green and the black in the back, where's my fainting couch. That pink one in the front went home with me. It's perfect for my pink party and will compliment the cake nicely.  

Always wanted to host a tea party but didn't want to buy all the cups and saucers? Vintage Mingle has you covered.  Tea parties are great for Mother's Day, a girlfriends get together or to treat grandma to a special day. 

 All that coloured glass is just so pretty and the orange on the bottom is gorgeous! I need to rent some for a Halloween party. 
See those glasses on the very bottom with the raspberry rims? yeah, I need those for a party. I don't know which party but I will. Just give me a minute ;) 

I could not stop looking at this cutie! Perfect for a Cinco de Mayo party. I can picture succulents or cacti in the orange bowl as part of a centerpiece for a Cinco de Mayo dinner. 

 Vintage Mingle also rents bigger items too. That dessert sign needs to be in one of my parties. 

I spent a good amount of time visiting the Vintage Mingle Rentals shop.  So many items I could rent for upcoming parties.  If you live in the Portland metro area and have an upcoming wedding or party, you should make a stop at Vintage Mingle.  By appointment only.
